THE GUARDS BRASS SEPTET
The Guards Brass Septet is an ensemble operating within the Guard’s Band of the Finnish Defence Forces. The Septet performs in the traditional line-up of a Finnish brass septet.
The Guard’s Brass septet was revived in 1988. The guiding thought behind the band’s work is to cherish the tone of a Finnish brass septet with an enriching approach in mind. The goal is to expand the line-up’s artistic possibilities.
THE FINNISH BRASS SEPTET – SOMETHING UNIQUE FROM FINLAND
Brass septet is the most “Finnish” of different band line-ups in the world. The original composition of a Finnish brass septet consists of an Eb-cornet, 1st and 2nd Bb cornets, Eb-alto horn, Bb-tenor horn, Bb-barytone horn (euphonium) and a tuba. This choice of instruments is unique to Finland as a regular performing line-up.
The unique sound of a brass septet is achieved by having all the instruments come from the board-mensure cornet family. Substituting the cornets with trumpets, the alto horn with a French horn or the euphonium with a trombone would break the velvety, harmonious whole of the unique brass septet sound. This is why the septet is clearly different from a brass band of the English tradition, the sound of which is created by combining both narrow-mensure and broad-mensure brass instruments. (narrow-mensure = cylinder tube, broad-mensure= cone tube).
